The Hamburg Station Mission was awarded 1st prize in the BDA Hamburg Architecture Prize 2024. The project had previously been nominated for the German Façade Award 2024 for ventilated rainscreen facades (VHF) in the “Modular Construction” category and made it to the final round, which brought the project nationwide attention.
CONSENS Bautechnik GmbH took on the challenging facade work on a modular timber frame construction for this unusual building project. The striking design, created by renowned Hamburg architect Carsten Roth, combines a green-colored 6WL stainless steel facade and a wood-look HPL facade. Particularly impressive: the stainless steel facade, whose color changes from yellow to blue to green depending on the incidence of light. The use of a thermal bridge-optimized stainless steel-aluminium combination substructure rounds off the overall concept, in which the focus was on the facade design and materiality, in terms of energy efficiency and structural engineering.
The building, situated in the central and challenging location between Glockengießerwall and the parking lot in Ernst-Merck-Straße, serves as temporary accommodation for the station mission and will possibly make way for the planned subway line 5. The extraordinary facade will hopefully be preserved for a long time before construction of the subway begins. In terms of the facade’s ability to be dismantled, reused and recycled, the planners have backed exactly the right horse for this temporary project with the VHF construction, to put it literally.
