The aluminum perforated sheet facade erected by CONSENS Bautechnik is used as a media facade using computer-controlled LED backlighting. The modern system has now been officially unveiled.
CONSENS Bautechnik has erected a very special facade cladding for a very special building directly on the Ostseekai in Kiel, one of the central piers for international cruise ships and ferries in Schleswig-Holstein. The individual perforated aluminum sheet facade, designed by BSP Architekten from Kiel, covers a new 16-megavolt ampere shore power system for cruise ships, which has already been put into operation and is unique in its dimensions in Germany to date. The system with the LED media facade was officially unveiled on December 9, 2020.
The champagne-colored perforated aluminum cassettes match the color of the facade of the existing cruise terminal and are equipped with computer-controlled LED backlighting. A total of 12,200 LEDs were installed here. This offers the operator a great opportunity to use the facade as a large screen, which extends over two complete sides of the windowless building.
In addition to the individual perforation of the facade cassettes, the rounded corners of the building with a radius of 2 meters posed a particular structural challenge for the implementation of the facade cladding.
Further information on the new shore power system can be found on the Port of Kiel’s website.
